Name: Kevin Magnay

Triathlon background

Errrrrrrr…….. this is going to be my first triathlon.

How old are you?

43

What do you think will be the toughest moment during the event?

The swim once fatigue sets in and it’s a battle to stay warm.

Favourite discipline (run, cycle, swim) and why?

Swim, I love being at the beach and getting in the sea.

Why do you push yourself to this level?

I don’t know 😂😂😂 To be honest I just enjoy the challenge and satisfaction I get at the end of the day knowing I’ve put a shift in.

What made you want to take on Arch2Arc?

I wanted a challenge that would scare and excite me.

Coming from London and having previously been a black cab driver, I’ve spent soo much time driving around Marble Arch and I now live in Dover where channel swimming has become a big part of my life. This event just seemed personal to me, almost like tracking my old life to my new life. Regarding the final leg I have no connection having never been to Paris - so that’ll be a first.

Favourite post-training meal

Soggy potatoes!

Least favourite discipline?

Cycling - As I said I used to be a cabby in London and wasn’t a fan of cyclists then and now I’m attempting to become one I hate it even more!!

What does finishing Arch2Arc mean to you personally?

It’s become an everyday part of my life for the past 2 years. There’s not a day when you don’t think about it. It’s a challenge that when I first heard about it I thought it was impossible and completely mad. But as you progress you start to think it’s possible, so finishing the A2A for me would be like doing the impossible.

Hidden talent outside of sport

Eating.

What do you do for work?

Delivery driver.

What does a typical training week look like?

2 strength sessions / 3 bike sessions / 3 run sessions / 4 swim sessions

Nationality / where you’re based

England

One word your friends would use to describe you

Clown!

Who or what inspires you?

Kevin Sinfield - An incredible sportsman who has done soo much work for charity whilst remaining humble.

What keeps you going when things get really tough?

I’m raising money for Aspire a charity who support people with spinal cord injuries so I have to keep going to raise as much money as possible for them.

Also food😂😂

How are you preparing differently for this compared to other races?

As stated previously I’ve never done a triathlon before, but I’ll compare from my previous channel swim.

Not having had a background in swimming I was self taught with not the best of strokes, so I’ve had my first swim lessons trying to become more efficient. So I’m more effective even when starting the swim fatigued after the run.

Any unusual or extreme training methods?

Swimming with potatoes.

Have you ever wanted to quit during training? What got you through it?

Not that many times to be honest but when I have felt that way I always tell myself this is my choice and I’m privileged to be able to take on a challenge of this magnitude so I can’t quit.

So many things in life become habitual and I tell myself that about quitting.

Again also the thought of food as a reward.
